Kimmo Hakonen has served as the Intelligence Ombudsman from 2019.

Hakonen has a roughly 40-year career in the public service, including positions in the University of Lapland, Defence Forces, Police College, Helsinki Police Department, National Bureau of Investigation, Ministry of Justice and Ministry of the Interior. In the Ministry of Justice, he served as Director of Prison Administration and in the Ministry of the Interior as Project Manager, Senior Adviser for Legislative Affairs, Deputy National Police Commissioner and Director of Legislative Affairs. Hakonen is on leave of absence from the post of Secretary General of the Office of the Chancellor of Justice, where he has also served as a Consultative Counsellor, substitute for the Deputy Chancellor of Justice and acting Deputy Chancellor of Justice.
